Advanced technology for IoT markets

Barcelona, October 2019
In the last 3 and a half years, different software, Internet of Things (IoT) and computing companies have worked together with several European Universities within the EU-funded project UniServer to improve energy-efficiency, robustness, ease-of-use, and security of computer system architectures.
UniServer has developed advanced technologies to integrate cloud computing and edge computing, two network infrastructures that are sometimes presented as exclusive approaches whereas in reality complement each other.
Data generated by IoT devices is usually sent to a platform where the information is cloud-hosted. While the cloud presents several advantages, security may be a weak point. In the case of an attack to the communications network, the cloud infrastructure cannot react promptly enough.
This is where edge computing comes in. Small, locally installed micro-servers house information at the edge of a network and enable information to be transmitted with no latency.  Introducing the capabilities of the edge infrastructure is the way for improving the security level of Internet-of-Things (IoT) devices.

Focus on improved security for IoT devices

The technology created in UniServer makes it possible that an alarm is sent from the IoT devices themselves if the communication is interrupted. This makes security autonomous and independent from cloud architectures.
Worldsensing has contributed to determine the future policies for coordinating cloud and edge infrastructures in real-life applications. In its capacity as IoT solutions provider, the company was responsible for some of the validation activities within the project. A commercial application for testing the Uniserver system architecture was successfully demonstrated.
Worldsensing also led the project exploitation and dissemination activities aimed at facilitating the uptake of the solutions produced and exploit business opportunities.
UniServer meeting

The project team during the review meeting in Belfast

UniServer has now come to an end after the final review meeting held in Belfast on 26-27 September 2019. The European Union representatives considered the project outputs very relevant within the overall high-level objective of developing sustainable Information and Communications Technology (ICT).
The work conducted in UniServer will support the next generation of processors that are being developed for different industry applications.

This project has received funding from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme under grant agreement No 688540. The opinions expressed and arguments employed herein do not necessarily reflect the official views of these funding bodies.
