FAQ’s

01

How can I improve the resolution of the VW data logger?

Use a sweep frequency group instead configuring a custom sweep frequency within a wider frequency range, as depending on the sensor group, resolution will vary.

02

How can I know when a sensor has been disconnected from the data logger? Which magnitude threshold should I need to apply?

Configure a threshold above the noise from the sensor. When this happens an error message of the sensor will be sent to the gateway. The recommended threshold value is 0.02, but there are sensors with magnitudes closer to the noise level. In case the gateway is running on a firmware version lower than 2.4.1, when a sensor is disconnected, the out-of-range value 16.777,215 Hz will appear.

03

I have a big variation on frequency readings, what can I do to correct them?

Usually the frequency variation between readings from the VW sensors is very low so in case of high frequency variation, it is recommended to check several points:
Check that the sensor is configured on the correct sweep frequency group (according to the manufacturer’s datasheet).
Check that the pairs are correctly wired on the data logger (according to the manufacturer’s datasheet). Additionally, tests can be done with a multimeter to check the resistance values.
Check the continuity of the wires. Note that this step can be also checked with the sensor wired detection functionality, although that it is important to set up the correct threshold on the data logger.
If finally the variation cannot be due to any of these causes, it is possible that the sensor or the data logger has been burned due to an electrical discharge.

04

Should I apply surge protection to my logger?

Vibrating wire data loggers have been equipped with class 2 surge immunity protection against damaging spikes and transients, following the IEC 61000-4-5. This means that the data logger is protected up to a voltage level of 1kV. To make the protection effective, it is necessary to ground the data logger, otherwise the surge protection cannot prevent the data logger from being damaged by direct or indirect lightning of such voltage. In any case, it is strongly recommended to apply surge protection for project sites in isolated environments. It is also important to note that nothing can protect a system from a direct lighting strike or one so close that it overloads the capacity of the surge protection.

05

I need to install the data logger inside manholes, do you have any recommendations?

For manhole installations, there are two main points that need to be considered. First, it is crucial to close the device properly to ensure water tightness. Additional measures can be done to improve the water tightness from the data logger by applying some sealant or bicomponent gel inside an electric case. It is also important to note that Loadsensing devices are IP67 certified and Worldsensing will not be responsible for any damages related to water ingress due to conditions higher than what is certified.
Second, the metallic manhole lids reduce radio coverage, so it is highly recommended, if possible, to use plastic lids.

06

I have found some timestamps missing on the reading files from the data logger but on the data logger information panel, no lost radio messages are reflected.

If the data logger is not properly closed, humidity may penetrate inside the device, especially in humid weather or locations where there is a big temperature change between night and day. As the gore valve will allow the humidity to go out from the device, if the proportion of humidity is not too relevant to damage the electronic board of the data logger, the data logger will restart taking readings once the humidity has been expelled.
